Baptism is a powerful, public, and very personal "enactment" of dying with Christ, and then rising with him to new life! (Check out Romans 6:1-4!)

And the Bible straight up says that it's the next step to take after we say YES to Jesus as our forgiver and Lord. In Jesus' parting words to his disciples, he told them:

“I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

And that’s exactly what they did. Over and over again, as the Jesus movement swept the world, the very first thing people did after they said yes to Christ’s forgiveness and leadership, was to be baptized.
